How has your understanding of copyright and legal images changed after this week...and how can you help your students with this topic, (perhaps a link to Character Education).

It is interesting as a new teacher how overlooked the problem of copyrighting can be. Before reading some articles on copyrighted products I would scan the internet and use any picture or posting that I desired. After reading about the damage that copyrighting can do in different situations I realized that this is something that I have been taking for granted. In Social Studies right now the students are working on an Ancient Civilization project. A lot of pictures have been borrowed from the internet. I had the students complete an art assignment then told them that for every assignment I would pay them $5.00. Afterwards I told the students that instead of paying them I was just going to use the internet and get their pictures for free. The students were furious. I explained copyrights and how the process worked and a lot of them are now creating their own drawings instead of borrowing from others. I think the students need to be made aware of the problem before they can decide how to deal with it. A lot had no idea at all that it was wrong.
